Project summary

The main challenge in using solar energy for water splitting is finding a semiconductor catalyst that can efficiently split water and optimize solar spectrum absorption. Most current catalysts either match only one band edge or have a broad band gap, limiting light absorption. This hinders single junction photoelectrodes from splitting water without external bias. Previous systems with this capability had bandgaps over 3 eV, restricting them to the UV part of the solar spectrum and yielding Solar-to-Hydrogen efficiencies below 1%. My project aims to overcome these limitations by combining a dual-photoelectrode water splitting system with a redox flow battery.
